Wisconsin River

Ferry Bluffs Eagle Sanctuary, WI
March 24, 1989

a dirt road ends abruptly

spring echoes
with simplicity
tranquil colorless
bare branches and snow patches
smooth water blends with bird chatter

a pair of ducks fly
skimming the water at low level

a lone dog barks far away

sound broken
                          ka-ronk
a musical invasion of honking geese
v-formations until fading gradually
to the trailing cries of the few

restored silence
when the first frog croaks

grasping the trees for a hold
I climb up the slippery trail
    a hundred feet or more
above to a sandy summit bluff
        wind rushes up
          river sweeps below
carrying away farms to a grey distance

a place to look out for changes
            feelings in the air
losing my balance
falling into open space
spreading my wings
knowing it's time to fly north
for a moment I can soar
with the thoughts of eagles
