Serpent Mound

Adams County, Ohio


Once long long ago,
a piece of the sky fell
on this land with
such immense violence
that the disordered rock
shattered geology.

The Great Serpent arose
from this place below,
writhing southward
to this sheer rock cliff
above the creek.

It faced the sun and froze
for three thousand years;
the rippling coils still
lead to the open jaws
that cannot speak.
