Night Visions on Interstate 10

glancing under the shadow of San Jacinto
the mountain speaks to desert darkness
stillness and sunlight stirs the earth
life flows up beneath the San Andreas --
water for a thousand palms

the silence arrives at unexpected moments
where psychic minds transform tomorrow's eye
rippling a mirage of certainty and strength
life shifts in heat and soundless harmony --
water for a million souls

the car's headlight beam dances with stars
for highway markers in flashes and vanishes
the struggle and freedom of pain and joy
life breathes and a future is exhaled --
warmth for a hand in mine
