MISSION STATEMENT

To disorient is to cause one to lose one's bearing; to confuse; to be thrown into disarray.

To disorient is to provide new information that doesn't fit with what's familiar, what's traditional, what's been accepted.

To disorient is to explode stereotypes in order to present new, unexpected images.

To disorient means all of the above and echoes our stance -- our "dis" stance or distance from what has been labeled as the "Orient" or "Oriental" by racist ideology in order to demean, disempower, and emasculate those of Asian Pacific Islander descent.

Our history has been one of exclusion: a conscious effort by mainstream institutions to deny the full fair participation of Asian Pacific Americans. Through the institutions of government, corporations, academia, media as well as the arts, we have all had to stage our own endless battles against the dominant society. Thus, in a call for fair representation in the literature and arts, we felt it was only appropriate to choose our name based on the deoconstructivist ideology. It is our mission, our quest in the following pages to redefine any accepted terminology.
