The "Japanese American Network" (JA*Net) was formed in the summer of 1995. At the time, the Internet contained very little in the way of information about Japanese Americans -- our history, culture, contributions, and major issues.
With a vision of exciting possibilities, a partnership of Japanese American organizations in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles was created to encourage further development of content for this new electronic medium. The founding organizations are the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC), the Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC), the Japanese American National Museum (JANM), and the Rafu Shimpo. Together, a virtual online community is created.
Ethnic community survival and ethnic cultural survival are two other reasons for the Japanese American Network. The Japanese American community is currently dispersing from its past urban ethnic centers. Also many younger Japanese Americans are now third-generation (sansei) and fourth-generation (yonsei) who feel a need to recover a sense of ethnic roots and identity. The Internet offers new ways to both bring the Japanese American community together, and to maintain a sense of our heritage.
Feel free to explore the resources provided, and please also write to us with your comments or suggestions. Please feel free to register and become a member. The development of this website has only just started, so please excuse some of the areas that are still inactive. This website will "always" be under construction. We hope you'll drop in often to keep up with the progress.
If you would like to submit a "link" to JA*Net, such as your personal homepage, please become a registered user, and submit the link in the appropriate area. Hopefully through everyone mutually "linking" to each other we'll gradually develop a "cyber-community".
Also users of this website can read and post any information on the JA*Net Bulletin Board. This is the "community" public place to post announements, to ask for help, or to perhaps just leave a comment.
Finally, before you leave, could you please sign our Guestbook? Thanks! |
